GK SPECIFIC FITNESS
Goalkeepers require different methods of conditioning to increase their fitness. The GK specific conditioning package focuses on increasing an individuals power, speed and core strength as well as other key attributes.
Why does a GK need power?
Power comes from an individuals strength but exerted very quickly. Power moments in goalkeeping include diving, jumping and kicking. If the goalkeeper can utilise their power combined with the correct technique this allows them to kick further, jump higher and make those top corner saves!
Speed? But goalkeepers only command their box?
Speed is invaluable when covering the goal, transitioning from positions and applying pressure quickly in 1v1 situations. Although speed is normally associated with sprinting in a straight line, a goalkeeper must have speed across various different movement patterns.
Other key skills worked on:
-
Co-ordination
-
Agility
-
Mobility
My challenge to all goalkeepers during these sessions:
Can you maintain a high level of technical ability while fatigue starts to accumulate in your mind and body?
Up for the challenge?
